Business in the Spotlight: Ostrich & the Egg

Apr 10, 2019

Worldwide’s World Guide is bursting at its seams with smart South African businesses abroad! Now you never have to wonder again where you can buy a crème soda or a packet Eet-sum-mor biscuits. There are lovely restaurants serving South African dishes and we have even listed Afrikaans church services. Each week Worldwide selects one of the businesses from the guide to appear in the Spotlight. This week it is Ostrich & the Egg in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.

Ostrich & the Egg is a family-owned South African eatery with a focus on iconic street food and Cape Malay koesister doughnuts.

Our “South African kitchen and bar” is an easy-going, casual dining experience, filled with good vibes and South African humour.

Our mission is to replicate and give an experience synonymous with kitchens in South Africa through these unmatchable aromas of spices and ingredients. We will take you on a hand-made, humble journey with your taste buds. We work in a small open kitchen, just like you would at home, using scratch cooking techniques where everything is prepared in-house.

Speaking of kitchens, it’s a place in the house where family and friends alike hang around and share daily stories and experiences over food and drink, so we invite you to do the same.

Back to the food – our menu is small, but again a focus on the iconic South African dishes as our aim is to keep it this way for now, whilst we give as many foodies as possible a chance to enjoy them. We also don’t have much “modernised” or “inspired” dishes, because we believe it’s important to get to know the original dish first.

Ultimately we strive to introduce South African flavours to Melbourne’s budding foodies. Day by day, dish by dish.
