Reading progress:

Christmas in Switzerland

Dec 7, 2021

While the beginning of December is a joyful time during which we look forward to a sea or Bushveld holiday and the little ones’ wishing lists for Christmas, this time of the year also includes deep longing and nostalgia. With Christmas, we always think of the children, grandchildren, brothers and sisters who celebrate on their own on the other side of the world. This week we talked to Michelle Vosloo to find out how they celebrate Christmas in Switzerland.

  1. Are there interesting Christmas practices and traditions?

Of course the people in Switzerland eat the most chocolate in the world and an Advent calendar is thus a must in our house. We will make beetroot lanterns put candles in and walk in the streets and sing songs. There are public, open-air ice skating rinks everywhere that we visit regularly.

2. Do you keep to the old traditional food and celebrations or do you celebrate Christmas in new ways?

As far as possible, we go back to where we originate from for Christmas and enjoy a traditional braai. If it is not possible we make a potjie in the snow.

3. Are there any other interesting traditions in Switzerland?

Yes, the Christmas trees here are real trees and not plastic. Shortly after the new year the Swiss have a Christmas tree celebration of joy and everyone brings their tree and burns it, while enjoying warm wine and bread!
