Is your family abroad this Christmas? Here is how to celebrate with them

Nov 29, 2019

With the Christmas season coming closer, one finds that everything is slower in South Africa. The schools are closing, the last jacarandas were washed out of the streets of Pretoria with thunderstorms, and the heat of a real Summer Christmas has already hit. In the shopping malls, Christmas carols have been playing since the first week of November. It is no surprise that the holiday season will soon be arriving.

While the beginning of December is a joyful time during which we look forward to a sea or Bushveld holiday and the little ones’ wishing lists for Christmas, this time of the year also includes deep longing and nostalgia. With Christmas, we always think of the cousins, brothers and sisters who celebrate on their own on the other side of the world. It is during this time that we recall family meals on Christmas Eve, unwrapping gifts together and even the cheap crackers revealing a pen or key holder with a bang. Here are a few ways to celebrate Christmas with your loved ones living far away when the loss gets too bad.

Skype

If your time zones don’t differ drastically, you can always share your Christmas dinner over Skype. Although it may feel strange, the companionship will definitely cheer up the whole family. Skype currently has 300 million users and with its video feature that can accommodate up to 25 people, it is the best option for a family spread over more than two locations. Check www.skype beste.com/en/ for their services.

WhatsApp calls

If you miss your family so badly that you would like to hear their voices, WhatsApp’s call function is ideal (especially for those who are less technologically skilled). Calls make use of the phone’s data, so if the application is installed on both parties’ phones, it is irrelevant whether the call is made internationally. The call comes through like a normal mobile phone call and the quality is excellent nowadays. The feature is therefore ideal for people who do not have Skype but are looking for a cheap alternative to communicate with loved ones.

Gift from De Afrikander Handelshuis (www.afrikander.com)

If you want to send a gift, De Afrikander Handelshuis is your one-stop shop for everything that is unique and Afrikaans. Local delivery by courier takes place within three business days, so you can send their web address to all the family overseas until shortly before Christmas. De Afrikander Handelshuis also delivers around the world within seven working days. The website is therefore ideal for sending unique South African products locally and internationally. Visit their website at www.afrikander.com and place an order that will brighten up your loved ones’ faces on Christmas Day.

Touchnote cards

This user-friendly application can be used to create your own Christmas cards on your tablet, phone or computer. After your design has been completed, the tickets are printed and delivered anywhere in the world. Please visit https://www.touchnote.com for their services.

This Christmas time does not only have to be nostalgic. It is the perfect opportunity to build new memories with your loved ones wherever they live in the world. With these few tips, this year’s Christmas season will be what it’s supposed to be – a feast!
