World in focus: Pack this in your USA luggage

Mar 12, 2020

Some people would agree that the build-up to a holiday – local or international – is sometimes more exciting than the holiday itself: Many plans in your head about the places to see and the memories to be made. We decided to start packing your US bags so long with everything that you’ll need to know. You can simply dream about the Grand Canyon and Elvis Presley with a pizza in your hand.

Pack the following eight tips in your backpack:

You may turn right at a red traffic light

There is an American road rule that you should keep in mind: the so-called turn-right-at-a-red-light rule. This rule determines that motorists across the 50 states are allowed to turn right at a red traffic light, provided that it is safe and there are no signs prohibiting a right turn. It is therefore important to be careful when crossing the road, as the cars drive on the right.

Understand the service fee etiquette

In most parts of the world the tip for someone who renders a service to you is optional. Even where it is expected, it is mostly a small amount. In the US, however, a tip of between 15% and 20% is expected on services. Be careful, however, and check your bill: Some places already add the amount – you can then just adjust it.

Lack of public transport – you’ll need a car

Although the US is technologically one of the most developed countries in the world, public transport can be hard to come by in this vast country. Expect to use buses or airplanes between larger cities, as train services are rather limited between these cities.

The best way of touring the US? Rent a car.

All seasons in one

The diverse climate stretches across the country. The north can be cooler, while the south can get quite hot.

When at the East Coast, expect hot and humid summers, while the West Coast offers a constant climate all year round. It is therefore important to pack the right clothes – ensure that you take along clothes fit for the region and time of year that you’ll be visiting.

Leave your flexible time concept at home

A flexible concept of time does not do well in the US. If you agree to meet someone at 07:00, it is important to be there at exactly 07:00, of even a little earlier.

Americans take punctuality very seriously, and they perceive it as very rude to be late. Allow yourself more time than you think is necessary to get somewhere, especially since you are not familiar with the area.

Shot right!

It is the habit in the US to walk on the side of you do not move with the flow. Americans do not want to move around you and they focus on the flow in which they move.

Do not walk on the left side of a passageway, porch, door or corner. Keep right, because people in the US are used to pass on your left.

Health first

Although travel insurance is important for any trip abroad, it is essential in case of a trip to the US. The country’s healthcare services are expensive, and you don’t want to say no to medical service in case of an emergency. To be on the safe side, invest in travel insurance and keep a copy with you when you travel. In fact, you won’t be able to obtain a visa without travel insurance.

Turnover tax is not included in the price

Every state has its own turnover tax rate, although some states, like Oregon, do not charge turnover tax. If you buy a hotdog in San Francisco for $10, a tax of 8,5% will be added. Keep this in mind when planning your travel budget. It may not seem like much in case of a hotdog, but it will be a lot more if you go to a grand restaurant.

The US is a country of interesting diversity and offers something for everyone. Pack your bags – the Great Apple awaits!
