How to maintain your South African citizenship

Nov 24, 2017

Many South Africans unwittingly lose their South African citizenship when they apply for another citizenship abroad, without first obtaining permission from the South African Department of Home Affairs to retain the South African citizenship. The citizenship can only be resumed upon proving that they are back in South Africa permanently. Few people are aware of this.

A further requirement is that a citizen of South Africa with multiple citizenships must always ensure that his/her South African passport remains valid, and when they travel to South Africa, the South African passports must be used without exception to enter and leave the country.

Enquiries regarding matters of citizenship can be submitted on Worldwide’s website, www.wereldwyd.co.za.
