Nature’s Corner – Brown-headed parrot

Aug 4, 2021

A brown-headed parrot feasts on the nectar of the flowers of a sausage tree near Satara in the Kruger National Park.

The brown-headed parrot (Poicephalus cryptoxanthus) is found on the savannas, riverine forests and open tree areas in Mozambique, the Lowveld and northern KwaZulu-Natal. They grow to a maximum of 25 centimetres in length.

The sausage tree (Kigelia africana) is widespread throughout Africa. It is not frost-resistant. The tree blooms from July to August. In the video, the unique colour of the flowers can be seen. The fruit to which the tree owes its name, is not edible, but can be used to treat wounds. The fruit can grow up to 75 centimetres in length.

The footage has once again been provided by Katie and André of Two-V Productions. We thank them for their great videos. Please subscribe to their YouTube channel and follow their Facebook page. Books in their Op Vlerke series can be ordered from Kraal Uitgewers. Number four in the series will be available soon. The books are published in Afrikaans only.
