New film: Blood and Glory

Aug 17, 2017

Blood and Glory (Modder en Bloed) is not your typical movie about the Anglo Boer War. This is a feel-good movie with a massive heart, and although the violence and injustices of war form part of the story line, it is friendship, bravery and team spirit that get the upper hand. The focus is on a group of prisoners of war on St. Helena who are taught the game of rugby by the English prison guards.

They are challenged to a game by the cruel and sadistic Colonel Swannell, and what follows is an epic battle that makes a rugby world cup match look like a teaparty. The ensemble cast includes well-known and exceptionally talented South-African actors like Stian Bam, Jacques Bessenger, Deon Lotz, Edwin van der Walt, Gustav Gerdener and De Klerk Oelofse. Grant Swanby is excellent as the antagonist, Colonel Swannell. Great attention to detail in the costume design and outstanding cinematography contribute to a very satisfying cinema-experience, while Sean Else does a stellar job in the director’s chair. This film is not just for rugby fans or those interested in the Boer War – the universal themes and strong storyline make for an engaging film that will draw everyone in and make them care deeply for the characters.
