WEEKEND REFLECTION: Excellence begins in your head

Nov 3, 2017

For a while we found peace in Hartenbos where our family (and the children’s cousins) have been living for years. We were amazed to see the new Hartenbos Seefront retail centre as we entered. It was also clear that Hartenbos and Mossel Bay are nowadays ‘big towns’ which no longer generate their income during holiday periods only.

Once again, it was interesting to see the difference in the service levels of different types of companies. For example, a certain venue advertised that a new drink would be available at a Steve Hoffmeyer concert – but within an hour they were out of stock, and later out of change as well. On the other hand, certain coffee shops and restaurants have delivered world-class service.

So what is my point?

  • Excellence is not optional if you plan to run a profitable and long-term business. Thanks to social media and online review platforms, there is no longer a hiding place for individuals and businesses that provide poor service.
  • Excellence begins in your head. It’s a way of thinking and doing – a world-class attitude that has a spin-off in everything that you take on, regardless of whether you have your own business or not.

Jacques Basson

After a wonderful childhood in Riebeeckstad and many years at the Kovsie campus to perfect my pool game (half-truth) and complete a business degree, my corporate sales and marketing career started with the Coca-Cola Company in 1999. Coca-Cola’s management development programme, Kusile, quickly developed by business expertise and five additional companies and senior roles in South Africa and England later – for among others Parmalat, Ecolab, Luxottica and Polaroid Eyewear – I started a commercial cleaning company, VanBroc Cleaning, in 2007, followed by a joint venture with a commercial cleaning company in Austin, Texas in 2012. After 14 years in England my family and I moved back to South Africa early in 2018 and we currently reside in Centurion. Of course, Klipkouers podcast is the new baby in the business family and I need your help raising the child!
