AfriForum releases latest episode in documentary series about South Africa’s porous borders

Jun 23, 2023

The third episode of the documentary series Open Borders was released today.

The episode titled “Cannabis and cattle theft” focuses on how non-existent border control between South Africa, Lesotho and Eswatini is fuelling cross border crime. One of the main themes in this episode is how stolen cattle and marijuana are smuggled across these borders.

Open Borders explores the consequences faced by regular South Africans because of the ease with which the border can be crossed illegally and how volunteers in border areas are stepping up to fight crime by forming neighbourhood watches and other civilian safety structures.

“The film illustrates how dire the situation on South Africa’s borders with these two countries are. The border is literally non-existent,” says Jacques Broodryk, AfriForum’s spokesperson for Community Safety and director of the documentary.

“AfriForum has 166 neighbourhood watches countrywide and many of these civilian safety structures fall in border areas. These volunteers have no choice but to step up and take the safety of their communities in their own hands because of the governments dismal failure to enforce border control and the clear lack of political will to address this enormous problem,” concludes Broodryk.

Open Borders: Cannabis and cattle theft can be viewed here or on AfriForumTV.
