Are you considering Airbnb for your next vacation? First read here!

Apr 24, 2019

With over 1,5 million accommodation options in 34 000 cities worldwide, Airbnb is the most popular hotel alternative for thousands traveling the world. If you plan to make your next booking through Airbnb, you’re in good company. But first you need to know how to really utilise Airbnb.

To begin with, it is important to specify the area where you want to stay as closely as possible in the search function. Then filter your options further by choosing whether you want a whole place for yourself or if you need a room only; do you want a hotel room, or are you willing to share a space or room? Refine your search by indicating whether you are traveling for work or pleasure, how many bedrooms you need, whether you want a place with a pool, and even if breakfast should be included. Once you have the relevant accommodation options in front of you, it’s time to choose. Here are four tips to ensure you choose the best accommodation!

Choose a super host

A definite winner is to choose a host who has super status on Airbnb. This means the host has good references and is experienced in receiving guests and satisfying their needs. Also check out the references of the accommodation you are considering so that you know what you can expect from your host. Do you want privacy or a host who will tour the city with you? Others’ comments will clearly indicate whether the host is actively interested in guests or giving them privacy.

Few photos, little expectations

A place with few photos on Airbnb is always a greater risk than one with lots of photos. Photos not only show how active the host is on Airbnb, but also help you understand what you can expect. You don’t want to be disappointed when you get there. If there is no photo of the braai area, then there probably isn’t one. If you only see a shower on the photos and not a bath, there probably isn’t one. To make sure the accommodation meets all your requirements, choose one with enough photos!

Ask, and it will be given to you

It’s a good idea to ask the host about everything you wonder about. Is there public transport nearby? How far is the nearest restaurant? Is it a busy or quiet area? Don’t hesitate to send the host a message. It will also show if the host is responding quickly, which again indicates whether he/she is active on Airbnb. If you really like a place which you cannot afford, you can ask for discount. Explain that the place is above your budget, but you would like to stay there. Just maybe the host will allow your request.

Don’t waste time, do an instant booking

Airbnb also gives you the option to filter posts for accommodation that can be booked immediately without waiting for confirmation. Normally, the host will first request and check your profile before the booking is confirmed. However, numerous hosts indicate that you can book at once. By making an instant booking, you avoid sending messages back and forth, and you can immediately be assured of your booking.

Airbnb is a trusted platform, and hosts rely on good ratings. Feel free to make your reservation. Most accommodation options are flexible with cancellations and allow you to cancel without charge up to 48 hours before your arrival.

Hope you are all geared up for your first booking on Airbnb!
