Reading progress:

Nature’s Corner – Black-crowned night heron is trying to catch a dragonfly

Oct 2, 2020

Two-V Productions’ André and Kate regularly post videos of their encounters with nature during their visits to the Kruger National Park.

They invite the readers of Spotlight to come and enjoy their love for wildlife with our regular feature, Nature’s Corner.

All the sounds you will hear in their videos are the original bush and wildlife sounds. They are passionate advocates for wildlife conservation and also invite you to subscribe to their YouTube channel, Two-V Productions, and like their Facebook page. Books in the Op Vlerke series can be ordered from Kraal Uitgewers. It can also be found at the shops in the rest camps of the Kruger National Park. Please note that the books are only available in Afrikaans.

This week, see how a black-crowned night heron is trying to catch a dragonfly to use as bait.

The black-crowned night heron is trying to catch a dragonfly to use as bait in Lake Panic near Skukuza Rest Camp in the Kruger National Park. After it has caught the dragonfly, it will sit on the bank of the lake and cast the insect in the shallow water, waiting for it to attract fish.

A heron had even been observed in the Singapore Botanical Gardens Pond where it manipulated pieces of bread to catch fish. They are known to use tools that include live insects, fruit, and even twigs that they cast into the water to bait fish.
